Artist’s Block
This series came about when I had a case of “Artist’s Block”. I really thought I’d never create again! I built myself a HUGE box (It’s bigger than I am!) and squeezed it into the boot of my tiny hatchback and drove around looking for places to photograph it. The box is really heavy and soon became metaphorical for the burden of our ridiculous possessions as I was shooting. I realised that the box would always look out of place so using traditional painting medium, I camouflaged it in an attempt to make it “fit in”. By changing the environment the viewer is forced to look not only at painting as a medium but at the effect it has on the area as a result of human intervention. The box, by using camouflage to attempt to fit in, irreversibly changes the environment in which it is placed. In our own effort to conform, we are irreversibly changing not only ourselves, but the world around us.
